The Discmania MD1 is a 5-speed stable midrange. With published flight numbers of 5 / 6 / 0 / 0, it is most often described as suited for straight tunnel approach shots, dead-straight midrange lines.

Overview

The Discmania MD1 is the straightest-flying midrange in Discmania's Originals line, with manufacturer flight numbers of 5 / 6 / 0 / 0.[1] It is a beadless, neutral mold built to hold whatever line it is given and finish with little to no fade, carried by exceptional glide.[1] First produced in 2006 as the very first Discmania mold, it was completely reinvented in late 2021 for the company's 15-year anniversary as 'the golden standard for straight flying midrange.'[1][2] Reviewers place it alongside the Innova Mako3 and Discraft Buzzz as a go-to straight midrange suitable for players of every skill level.[4]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The MD1 excels at straight tunnel approach shots, dead-straight midrange lines, and gentle hyzer or anhyzer shaping where you want the disc to hold its angle.[1][4] Its neutral flight makes it a forgiving all-around midrange for beginners while remaining controllable for advanced players.[1] It comes in Discmania's Originals plastics: affordable D-Line in three flexes, ultra-durable see-through C-Line, and the all-weather-grip S-Line, plus specialty runs such as Glow and Swirl blends.[1]

Best for:

  • Straight tunnel approach shots
  • Dead-straight midrange lines
  • Gentle hyzer and anhyzer shaping that holds its angle
  • All-around midrange for beginners learning lines
  • Touch approaches inside 250 ft

Plastics & variants

The MD1 is available in the following plastic blends from Discmania:

D-Line, C-Line, S-Line, Glow C-Line, Swirl S-Line

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The MD1 was the first mold Discmania ever released, debuting in 2006 when the brand's discs were produced under a partnership with Innova; the original MD1 was PDGA-approved on November 14, 2006 (certification 06-47).[3] In late 2021, to celebrate its 15-year anniversary, Discmania 'reinvented' the disc that started the brand, retooling the MD1 to be its straightest Originals midrange; the reinvented mold was PDGA-approved on December 6, 2021 (certification 21-134).[1][2] The modern MD1 measures 21.7 cm in diameter with a 1.4 cm rim depth and a maximum weight of 180.1 g.[2] It remains one of Discmania's best-selling discs, prized as a neutral, glidey midrange that suits a wide range of players.[1][4] Discmania, founded in Finland, splits its catalog into the Originals, Evolution, and Active lines.[1]
