The MVP Photon is a 11-speed stable distance driver. With published flight numbers of 11 / 5 / -1 / 2.5, it is most often described as suited for high-power straight drives with a reliable fade, headwind distance drives.

Overview

The MVP Photon is a high-speed distance driver in the GYRO® overmold family, with manufacturer flight numbers of 11/5/-1/2.5.[1][3] MVP describes it as 'a longer Tesla' — a stable-to-overstable 21mm driver where power throwers can coax a flight-extending high-speed turn while all throwers get a reliable, late fade.[1] It is naturally headwind-resistant, and average arms can use a headwind to emulate the turn that big arms generate.[1] The GYRO® construction — a denser outer rim molded onto a lighter core — gives the Photon its torque resistance and dependable finish across power levels.[1][4]

Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.

The Photon is best used for high-power straight drives with a dependable fade, headwind shots, and controlled flex lines.[1][3] Stronger arms get a usable shallow turnover for added carry; moderate arms get a straight push into a reliable finish.[1] It is a strong forehand option thanks to its torque resistance.[4] Lighter Fission runs make it easier to get up to speed for more distance, while Neutron and Proton hold a more overstable, wind-ready flight.[4]

Best for:

  • High-power straight drives with a reliable fade
  • Headwind distance drives
  • Controlled flex and S-curve lines for big arms
  • Forehand distance shots (torque-resistant)
  • Wind-ready stability in Neutron and Proton

Plastics & variants

The Photon is available in the following plastic blends from MVP:[1]

Neutron, Proton, Plasma, Fission, Cosmic Neutron, Eclipse

Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.

History

The Photon was PDGA-approved on February 6, 2015 (certification 15-03) as part of MVP's 21mm distance-driver class, which launched amid high demand for high-speed GYRO® drivers.[2][1] MVP positioned it as a longer companion to the popular Tesla, occupying the stable-to-overstable slot in the 21mm class alongside the Wave, Zenith, and Phase.[1] The GYRO® overmold technology — MVP, Axiom, and Streamline's shared signature — concentrates mass at the outer rim for a distinctive in-hand feel and stability.[1] The Photon has since been offered across Neutron, Proton, Plasma, Fission, and Cosmic Neutron plastics, with periodic special-edition runs.[1][4]
