The Axiom Pyro is a 5-speed overstable midrange. With published flight numbers of 5 / 4 / 0 / 3, it is most often described as suited for overstable flex and hyzer lines, headwind midrange approaches.
Overview
The Axiom Pyro is an overstable midrange built on a 14.5mm-class wing, designed by Axiom — an MVP sister brand — as a glidier counterpart to the MVP Deflector.[1][3] Axiom rates it 5 / 4 / 0 / 2.5; most third-party databases round it to 5 / 4 / 0 / 3, reflecting a straight initial flight with a dependable, commanding fade at the end.[1][3] The GYRO overmold construction gives it a stable, torque-resistant feel that resists turnover on powerful or sidearm throws while retaining more glide than a typical blunt overstable mid.[1][4]
Flight characteristics
Flight numbers describe the published behavior of the disc when thrown at its design speed. Real-world flight varies with plastic, weight, age, and thrower power. The community-averaged numbers above reflect crowd-sourced observations from real throws — typically slightly more understable than the manufacturer's published values, which is the most consistent pattern across nearly every commercial mold.
Recommended uses
The Pyro is a control and utility midrange for shots that need a reliable finish — flex lines, headwind approaches, forehand placement shots, and predictable hyzers into the basket.[3][4] Its glide lets it cover more ground than blunt overstable mids before fading out, making it useful both as an approach disc and a controlled midrange driver.[1][4] Axiom offers it in Neutron, Proton, and the premium Prism Neutron and Prism Proton blends; the firmer rims hold overstability longest.[1][3] It is not an understable or straight-to-flippy midrange.[4]
Best for:
- Overstable flex and hyzer lines
- Headwind midrange approaches
- Forehand placement shots
- Predictable fade into the basket

Plastics & variants
The Pyro is available in the following plastic blends from Axiom:[1]
Neutron, Proton, Prism Neutron, Prism Proton, Fission
Plastic blend significantly affects flight character. Premium plastics like Champion, Z, or C-Line generally fly more overstable when fresh and hold their stability over time. Base plastics like DX, Pro, or Active beat in faster and become more understable workhorses with use.
History
The Pyro was PDGA-approved on February 13, 2019 under certification number 19-14.[2] PDGA measurements list it at 21.5cm diameter, 1.6cm height, a 1.3cm rim depth, a 1.6cm rim thickness, and a maximum weight of 178.5g.[2] Axiom, the premium sister brand to MVP, introduced the Pyro as its overstable midrange offering — described by the company as an Axiom variation of the MVP Deflector with more glide and a straighter profile while keeping a commanding stable finish.[1] It has since been produced across the brand's Neutron, Proton, Fission, and Prism plastic families and has become a popular utility and approach midrange for intermediate and advanced players.[1][3]
